Climate change is increasingly becoming a global health concern, particularly in regions like Jigawa State in northern Nigeria, where the effects of extreme weather patterns, including rising temperatures and changing rainfall, have led to increased vulnerability among the population. These changes affect not only the environment but also public health, with significant implications for the incidence of climate-related diseases such as respiratory illnesses, waterborne diseases, and vector-borne diseases (Oluwaseun & Abiola, 2023). In Jigawa State, where agricultural and water resources are critical to public well-being, climate-induced changes have exacerbated challenges related to food security, water availability, and disease prevalence.
Public perception of climate change plays a key role in determining how communities respond to these health risks. Understanding how the residents of Jigawa State perceive climate change and its associated health impacts can help guide policy formulation and interventions aimed at mitigating the public health consequences of climate change. This study will investigate the public perception of climate change in Jigawa State and how it relates to health concerns.
Despite the increasing awareness of climate change globally, the perception of its health implications in many parts of Nigeria, including Jigawa State, remains limited. The lack of public awareness of the link between climate change and health may result in inadequate preventive measures, ultimately heightening the risks of climate-related diseases. This study seeks to assess how the residents of Jigawa State perceive climate change and the health challenges it poses, aiming to enhance public awareness and inform health policy and interventions.
The study will focus on residents of Jigawa State, with an emphasis on urban and rural populations. Limitations may include challenges in collecting data from diverse communities with varying levels of education and exposure to climate change-related information.
